Children stand where the painter found them, in working clothes, looking back at him without performing. James Guthrie painted village children in the early 1880s.

He had walked away from studio painting and gone to live in the country — first Brig o' Turk, then Cockburnspath — to paint outdoors from the people who were actually there. No costumes, no anecdote, no moral. Just the light on a face at the end of an afternoon.

That decision is what made the Glasgow Boys, and Guthrie made it first.
