The Scottish Colourists

Four painters came back from France before the First World War with a way of seeing that had nothing to do with Edinburgh: flat fields of hot colour, shadows deleted, a jug of roses given the weight of a portrait.

Peploe went to Iona in 1920 with Cadell and returned nearly every summer for the rest of his life. Prints here are of works by Peploe, Cadell and Leslie Hunter — J. D. Fergusson, the fourth, remains in copyright until 2032.
