A gardener and his daughter in a field of cabbages under a heavy sky, painted by Arthur Melville in 1877 — no story, no moral, just two people and the vegetables.

It was his Royal Academy debut, and he sold it to a Lasswade paper manufacturer for enough money to get himself to Paris. Everything came from there: within five years he was dodging bullets in Persia and had been jailed as a spy in Kurdistan. He died of typhoid at forty-nine.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
