Sir Henry Raeburn

Raeburn painted Edinburgh at the height of its Enlightenment — judges, lairds, merchants and their children, lit from one side and set against nothing at all. He worked without preliminary drawing, straight onto the canvas, which is why the faces have the alertness of someone caught mid-sentence.

He was knighted in 1822 and made King's Limner for Scotland the year after, having spent his whole career refusing to move to London.
