This is the face on every Burns Night programme in the world, and it was painted in 1787 on a canvas smaller than a sheet of A3.

Burns sat for it because his publisher wanted a frontispiece. He wrote to a friend at the time: “I am getting my phiz done by an eminent engraver, and, if it can be ready in time, I will appear in my book, looking like all other fools to my title page.” By tradition Nasmyth stopped before finishing it, afraid of losing the likeness. The two men were friends, brought together by a shared patron and a shared taste for radical politics.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
