Oberon and Titania fall out in a wood, and around them Joseph Noel Paton packed in more than a hundred fairies — a picture you cannot finish looking at.

He painted it in 1849 for a competition, and it made him famous. Lewis Carroll saw it and reportedly counted the figures. Paton was a Dunfermline man, trained as a damask designer before he took up painting, and the fairy pictures kept a hold on the Victorian imagination that has never entirely let go.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
