White sand, water the colour of a swimming pool, and Ben More across the sound. F. C. B. Cadell painted Iona nearly every summer from 1912 until his death.

Nobody who has not been there believes the colour. Cadell painted it flat and undiluted — turquoise, jade, hard white — because that is what the light on Hebridean shell sand actually does, and softening it would have been the lie.

He went out most years with Peploe. Between them they made Iona a subject in Scottish painting, and the island still looks like their pictures.
