Cadell was the most stylish of the Scottish Colourists — flat planes, hard edges, colour laid on without apology. He had trained in Paris at sixteen and never entirely came home in his handling.

He served in the Great War in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and the painting after it is sharper and cooler than the painting before.
