Angus Òg, the Gaelic god of love, stands over a calm sea with birds circling his head — in the old stories his kisses turn into birds, and they follow him everywhere.

John Duncan painted it as part of the Celtic Revival, the movement that went looking in Irish and Scottish myth for a national art that owed nothing to London. He worked in Edinburgh with Patrick Geddes and painted in tempera, deliberately reviving a medieval technique to suit a medieval subject.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
