A flower market in Nagasaki, painted as one continuous field of colour with people in it. E. A. Hornel made the picture out of his 1893 journey to Japan.

Every surface competes — blossom, kimono, paper, sky — and Hornel refuses to rank them. It is the clearest statement of what the Glasgow Boys were arguing for: that a painting is an arrangement before it is an account of anything.

He came home to Kirkcudbright and spent the rest of his life proving the same point in a Scottish garden.
