A balcony in Yokohama, painted by a man from Kirkcudbright eighteen months into the strangest journey of his life. E. A. Hornel was in Japan in 1893 and 1894.

He went with George Henry, funded by a Glasgow dealer and a shipowner, and painted almost nothing but women and children — at close range, in patterned cloth, under a light he had never had to handle before.

The Japanese pictures made his name in London and changed how he painted Galloway for the next thirty years.
