A child among goats in high summer, painted so thickly that the flowers stand off the surface. E. A. Hornel worked this way in Galloway through the 1890s.

He and George Henry had decided that colour and surface could carry a picture on their own, without a story to justify them. Critics in Glasgow called it decorative, which was meant as an insult and turned out to be the point.

Hornel lived and painted at Broughton House in Kirkcudbright, and the garden he made there is still open.
