The fairy queen wraps her arms around a weaver with a donkey's head, and neither of them thinks it strange. Edwin Landseer painted Scene from A Midsummer Night's Dream: Titania and Bottom around 1851.

It is the oddest picture in his catalogue and the one that shows what he could really do. Landseer spent his life painting animals well enough that people forgot to look at anything else; here the animal is a man, the rabbits at Titania's feet are watching, and the whole thing hangs somewhere between tenderness and farce.

Bottom's ears are painted with the same seriousness Landseer gave a stag's antlers. That is the joke, and it is why the picture still works.
