Edinburgh from the Braids by Patrick Nasmyth Art Print

Edinburgh seen from the south, low and pale on the horizon, with the Braid Hills doing most of the work in the foreground. Patrick Nasmyth painted the city from this distance in the early nineteenth century.

It is a view that has almost survived. The hills are still there and still open; the city between them and the Firth has thickened. What Nasmyth caught is the way Edinburgh sits in a bowl of countryside — a fact that is obvious from the Braids and invisible from Princes Street.

He grew up in his father Alexander's Edinburgh studio, where the family taught landscape painting to half the city.
