Roses crowded into a vase, painted flat and hot, with the shadows all but deleted — S. J. Peploe pushing colour as far as it will go before the thing stops being a bunch of flowers.

Peploe kept a cupboard of props and used the same objects over and over: the fans, the jugs, the fruit, endlessly rearranged. Around 1910 he stopped painting people almost entirely and gave the rest of his life to still life and to Iona. The tighter handling here owes a good deal to Cézanne.
