Hutton is the man who worked out that the Earth is unimaginably old. Standing at Siccar Point on the Berwickshire coast, looking at two rock formations meeting at an angle, he understood that the ground records cycles of destruction and renewal with, as he put it, “no vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end.” Modern geology starts here.
