Pitlessie Fair by David Wilkie Art Print

A hundred and forty people crammed into one village fair in Fife. David Wilkie painted it in 1804, when he was nineteen, and he put his own neighbours in it — he sketched them in his father's church, which caused a certain amount of trouble.

Pitlessie is where he grew up; his father was the parish minister of Cults. Everything is happening at once: livestock changing hands, drink being taken, a fight starting somewhere at the back. It made his name and he left for London the following year.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
