A young man hands over a letter and waits while an old man reads it slowly, and the dog is not convinced either. David Wilkie painted The Letter of Introduction in 1813.
He had arrived in London from Fife a few years earlier with exactly such a letter in his pocket, so he knew precisely how long that silence lasts. The picture is small, and every object in the room is doing something to make it feel longer.
It is the most quietly funny painting in Scottish art.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
