David Hume was the sharpest mind of the Scottish Enlightenment, the philosopher who doubted causation, miracles and the self and was cheerful about all of it. Allan Ramsay, his friend, painted him in 1766, the year Hume came home from Paris, where the salons had adored him; the coat is the one he wore as secretary to the British embassy. Ramsay painted Rousseau in the same year, as a pair, and the two pictures hung together before that friendship fell spectacularly apart.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
