Margaret Lindsay eloped with Allan Ramsay in 1752 against her family's wishes, and he painted her about six years later with the delicacy he had learned from French pastel portraits in Paris. Ramsay was the leading portrait painter of the Scottish Enlightenment, the son of the poet of the same name, and the man George III chose as his principal painter. He kept this picture for himself.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
