A snowball fight in full swing on South Bridge, students against townies, a woman ducking, a cab horse unimpressed, and the Old College of Edinburgh University looking on through the falling snow.
Samuel Bough painted it in 1853, a few years after arriving in Scotland from Carlisle, and it is the liveliest winter picture of Edinburgh there is. Bough had been a theatre scene-painter in Manchester and Glasgow, and it shows: the composition is staged like a crowd scene, with every figure given something to do. The Old College is still there, and the snow still falls on it, though the fighting has moved indoors.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
