Delacroix's 1849 painting of Tam o' Shanter, Burns's drunk farmer fleeing the witches of Alloway Kirk, a French Romantic reading of Scotland's favourite poem.
The horse is at full stretch and the hags are almost at its tail. In Burns's poem, witches cannot cross running water, so Tam's mare Meg has only to reach the keystone of the Brig o' Doon. She makes it, minus her tail. Delacroix, who painted the subject more than once, puts the whole chase in a single diagonal of storm light.
The original is in the Kunstmuseum Basel.
