Two lovers on a balcony under a rising moon, a book forgotten on her knee, his arm just reaching round her. And at the far left edge, if you look, a single hand on the parapet that belongs to neither of them.

The hand is the husband's. Dante put Paolo and Francesca in the second circle of Hell for this moment; Dyce painted the moment itself in 1837 and included Gianciotto creeping up on them. The canvas was later cut down and the husband was lost, all but that hand, which is now the most unsettling thing in a picture that otherwise looks like pure romance. William Dyce, born in Aberdeen, went on to paint the frescoes in the Palace of Westminster, and this is the painting that announced him.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
