Anne Orr, painted by her son, in black, giving nothing away. James Guthrie painted his mother in the 1880s.
There is no setting to speak of and no attempt to flatter. He gives her the same unsentimental attention he gave the farm workers at Cockburnspath, which from a son is a kind of respect that most Victorian portraits never risk.
Guthrie went on to be President of the Royal Scottish Academy and the most sought-after portraitist in Scotland. This is where the manner starts.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
Printed to order on heavyweight archival paper with a narrow white border that keeps the painting's own proportions. Framed in black, wood or white, or unframed for your own frame. Shipped worldwide.
