A frozen loch covered in curlers, stones sliding, brooms up, breath in the air, and the hills of Perthshire white behind. Scotland's own game, played on the day the whole country turned out for it.
Carsebreck was where the Royal Caledonian Curling Club held its Grand Match, north against south, whenever the ice would bear it. Charles Martin Hardie painted the 1899 match as a group portrait of the club's leading players, each face a likeness, which is why the figures in the foreground look as if they expect to be recognised. Hardie, born in East Linton in 1858, is best known for pictures of Burns and Scott; this is the one people stop in front of.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
