A Tokyo street painted by a man from Kirkcudbright who had never seen anything like it. E. A. Hornel worked in Japan in 1893 and 1894.

He and George Henry sailed there on money put up by a Glasgow dealer and a Glasgow shipowner, stayed eighteen months, and came back with the pictures that made both their reputations. Hornel painted what was in front of him at close range — cloth, paper, faces in a crowd — and let the paint stay thick enough to see.

The trip changed his handling permanently. Everything he painted afterwards in Galloway has Japan somewhere in it.
