Girls in a wood in full leaf, half hidden by the paint itself. E. A. Hornel called it Summer and left it at that.
The figures are not doing anything and are not meant to. Hornel builds the picture out of blossom, dappled light and the weight of loaded brushwork, and lets the children be part of the pattern rather than the subject of it.
It is the manner he brought back from Japan, applied to a Kirkcudbrightshire wood.
Printed to order on heavyweight archival paper with a narrow white border that keeps the painting's own proportions. Framed in black, wood or white, or unframed for your own frame. Shipped worldwide.
