A loch in the Trossachs with a party of well-dressed visitors on the shore, pointing, consulting, taking it all in. They have come because of a poem, and they are among the first tourists Scotland ever had.
Walter Scott published The Lady of the Lake in 1810, set it at Loch Katrine, and the carriages started arriving within the year. John Knox painted the result around 1820: the landscape and the people looking at the landscape, in the same picture. Knox, born in Paisley in 1778, ran a drawing academy in Glasgow where a young Horatio McCulloch was his pupil, so the whole Victorian Highland school runs back through this quiet, slightly amused painting.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
