Hokusai and the Butterfly by John Lavery Art Print
£32.00
The painter E. A. Walton and his fiancée Helen Law, painted by John Lavery in a flat, high-keyed Japanese manner and titled Hokusai and the Butterfly.
Two Glasgow Boys in one picture: Lavery painting Walton, both of them working through the Japanese prints that were then reaching Glasgow through the shipping trade. The flattened space, the cropped composition and the decorative surface all come from that.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
