Tangier after dark, reduced to a few tones and a great deal of confidence. John Lavery wintered in Morocco for much of his adult life.
He bought a house on the hill above the town and painted it in every light he could find. This is the hardest of them — a night picture built from close-valued greys and blues, where one wrong tone would flatten the whole thing.
Lavery learned his economy in Glasgow and Paris, and it never left him.
