Cabbages, leeks, turnips and rhubarb piled on a stall, every one of them laid on with a loaded knife as if the paint were the vegetable. Nobody in Scotland had painted this plainly before, and it changed what a generation thought painting was for.
William York MacGregor was the oldest of the Glasgow Boys and the one the others called the father of the group; his Bath Street studio was where they met and argued in the early 1880s. The Vegetable Stall is from 1884, and it once had a girl standing behind the produce. MacGregor painted her out himself, deciding the vegetables did not need her, and he was right.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
