A young woman in white against a dark ground, the veil framing a face that is composed, watchful and not yet twenty. The white is not a bridal colour. It is mourning, the deuil blanc of the French court, and she had a great deal to mourn.
In the space of eighteen months around 1560 Mary lost her father-in-law, her mother and her young husband, Francis II of France. François Clouet drew her in the white veil during that time, and this painting is one of the versions made from his drawing. It is the face by which she was known in France, before she sailed home to Scotland in 1561 and into the reign that ended on the scaffold at Fotheringhay.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
