Still water, a boat drawn up on the shore and the hills of Bute going soft in the late light. It is a quieter picture than the Highland set pieces that made McCulloch famous, and some people will prefer it for that.
Loch Fad lies a mile south of Rothesay, and McCulloch painted it in 1844, in the years when he was working his way around the lochs and islands of the Clyde before the grand Highland commissions arrived. Born in Glasgow in 1805, he became the painter who fixed the look of Scotland in the Victorian mind, and this is the gentler side of that project.
