Two boys in red tartan on a green sward, one with a club over his shoulder, a caddie and the links behind. It is as early an image of golf as Scottish painting has, and it was made within a few years of the Act that made tartan illegal to wear.

Sir James and Sir Alexander Macdonald of Sleat sat for this double portrait around 1749, three years after Culloden, when the Dress Act of 1746 had banned Highland clothing for ordinary men. Children of the gentry were not caught by it, which is one reason the picture could be painted at all. It is attributed to William Mosman, the Aberdeen-born painter who had trained in Rome. James would die at twenty-four in Italy, admired as one of the most promising young men of his generation; Alexander became the first Lord Macdonald.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
