Princes Street in 1825, with the Royal Institution going up in the foreground — scaffolding, carts, workmen — and the Old Town on its ridge behind.
The building under construction is the one that now houses the Royal Scottish Academy, and the gallery that owns this painting runs it. Nasmyth set brand-new Georgian architecture against the volcanic rock the city sits on, at exactly the moment Edinburgh geologists were working out how old that rock was. He also cheated the viewpoint: Arthur's Seat is more visible here than it could ever be from that spot.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
