Edinburgh laid out along its ridge, the castle rock on the left and Arthur's Seat closing the distance — Alexander Nasmyth painting the city he lived in as a piece of geology with a town on top of it.
Nasmyth is called the father of Scottish landscape painting, and he taught both David Wilkie and David Roberts. He was also a friend of Robert Burns and painted the portrait of him that the world still uses. He gave up portraiture in 1792 when his liberal politics offended his patrons, and turned to this instead.
