Nasmyth is called the father of Scottish landscape painting, and he taught both David Wilkie and David Roberts. He was also a friend of Robert Burns and painted the portrait of him that the world still uses. He gave up portraiture in 1792 when his liberal politics offended his patrons, and turned to this instead.
