Border country in the flat, generous light that comes after rain: a broken tower, a village, and a great deal of sky. Patrick Nasmyth painted the Roxburghshire fields around Cessford in the 1820s.

Cessford Castle had already been a ruin for two hundred years when he got there. Nasmyth does not make a drama of it — the tower is one more thing in the landscape, no more important than the hedgerow or the cart track.

He was Alexander Nasmyth's eldest son, and he left Edinburgh for London young. English collectors called him the English Hobbema, which he was not; he was a Scot who had learned to paint weather.
