White sand, turquoise water and the pink granite of Iona — the view S. J. Peploe came back to almost every summer for the last fifteen years of his life.
Cadell took him there in 1920. He lodged at Cùlbhuirg farm and worked the north end of the island, returning again and again to one particular outlook over the sound. For Iona he dropped the warm tones of the still lifes entirely and painted in cool greens and blues. In 1918 he had written: “When the War is over I shall go the Hebrides … Oh, Iona.”
The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
