Pears, a glass, a white cloth, and forty years of argument about where to put them. S. J. Peploe painted still life almost every day of his working life.

He would rearrange the same objects for hours before touching a brush. The looseness in the finished picture is entirely deliberate — it is what is left after the composition has been settled to the millimetre.

Peploe was the first of the Scottish Colourists and the most disciplined. This is the subject he never exhausted.
