A Normandy village painted by a Scot who had just discovered what French colour could do. S. J. Peploe worked at Veules-les-Roses on the Channel coast.

He painted in France repeatedly in the years before 1914, often with J. D. Fergusson, and came back each time with his palette raised. The Scottish Colourists are usually explained through Paris; the work was frequently done in small coastal towns like this one.

Peploe went home to Edinburgh and spent the rest of his life applying what he had learned to a table of flowers.
