Cloud shadows moving across a moor, a few sheep in the heather, and the slow drift of weather over hills that have nothing to do with people at all.
Peter Graham made a career of exactly this. Born in Edinburgh in 1836, he moved to London and became the Royal Academy's Highland painter, showing mist, moorland and cattle to an audience that could not get enough of them. Wandering Shadows, from 1878, is the title picture of that career, the name itself describing what the painting actually shows: light passing.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
