Louisa Oswald in white muslin against a dark ground, painted by Henry Raeburn around 1794 — she was in her mid-thirties and had three years to live.
Raeburn worked without a preliminary drawing. He put the brush straight onto the canvas and built the head in blocks of light, which is why his sitters look caught rather than posed, and why the edges of a Raeburn dissolve when you stand close to them.
The original oil hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
