Gow was the greatest Scottish fiddler of his century, a Perthshire man who played for the Duke of Atholl and whose strathspeys are still in every session repertoire two hundred and fifty years later. Raeburn painted him more than once and evidently liked him — the picture has none of the stiffness of the judges and lairds.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
