Two children, one holding the other, painted by Henry Raeburn around 1811 with the light coming from a single high window and everything else left in shadow.

Raeburn painted children better than almost any of his contemporaries because he did not sentimentalise them. He worked without preliminary drawing, straight onto the canvas, so the faces have the alertness of people who have been asked to sit still and are only just managing it.

The original hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
