Burns in red chalk, soft-edged and dreamy, the head turned a little as if he has just heard a line he likes. It is the most romantic face of the poet ever made, and it was made by a man who never saw him.
Archibald Skirving drew it in the years just after Burns died in 1796, working from Nasmyth's small portrait of 1787 and improving on it the way memory does. The result became the Burns that Victorian Scotland wanted: idealised, handsome, a little sad. Engravers combined Skirving's features with Nasmyth's setting, and that hybrid is the face on the statues and the shortbread tins to this day.
The original is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
