A lighthouse standing in the middle of a sea that is trying to take it down, spray breaking up its full height, a shaft of light cutting through the storm behind.
The Bell Rock sits eleven miles off Arbroath, covered by the tide twice a day, and Robert Stevenson built a lighthouse on it between 1807 and 1810 that still stands and still works. Stevenson commissioned Turner to paint it for the book he wrote about the job, and Turner, who had never seen it, gave him this. The engineer's grandson was Robert Louis Stevenson, who grew up on the family's lighthouse stories and never quite escaped them.
The original is in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
