Distraining for Rent by David Wilkie Art Print

The bailiffs are in the farmhouse, the furniture is being counted, and the farmer has his head in his hands. David Wilkie painted Distraining for Rent in 1815.

It was too close to the bone. Landowners who had cheerfully bought his cottage scenes did not want this one on a wall, and the picture was attacked as an attack on them. Wilkie insisted he had only painted what was happening in the countryside after the wars, which was true and did not help.

Look at the child at the left who has not understood yet, and the wife who has.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
