Walter Scott and his family got up as Border peasants, on the lawn at Abbotsford, in 1817. It was Scott's idea.
He was the most famous writer alive and he was inventing a version of Scotland that the world then bought wholesale — so having Wilkie paint him in character, with his own children as farm folk, is the whole project in one picture. Abbotsford was still being built at the time.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
