Mungo Murray was a son of the first Marquess of Atholl, and John Michael Wright painted him around 1683, a lifetime before the kilt was romanticised. This is the earliest known full-length portrait of Highland dress, and it shows the plaid as it was actually worn: one long piece of cloth, pleated and belted, the upper half thrown over the shoulder. Mungo died at thirty-one in Panama, with the Darien expedition that broke Scotland's economy and helped bring on the Union.
