An old man in tartan with a white bonnet and a stick, looking out from under the brim as if he has seen you coming for some time. He had seen a great deal. Patrick Grant stood on the field at Culloden in 1746 and was still alive to sit for this portrait in the 1820s.

Known as Auld Dubrach, from the farm where he lived in Braemar, Grant was presented to George IV during the royal visit of 1822 and granted a pension of a guinea a week. He was 108 when Colvin Smith painted him, and he died two years later, one of the very last men who could say he had fought for the Stuarts. The tartan he wears had been illegal for most of his adult life.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
